Sebaceous cysts are small cysts or fluid-filled sacs that develop slowly under the skin. They can occur anywhere on the body and are usually harmless or cancerous, unless they become infected, inflamed, grow large, or develop in areas subject to frequent friction.

  • Causes of skin disease include genetic disorders such as Gardner's Syndrome, certain types of skin cancer (Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome), or congenital malocclusion of skin cells.

  • Skin injuries from various causes, such as wounds (surgical scars, acne, scratches), can lead to misplaced skin cells during repair.

  • Blocked sebaceous ducts or sweat glands, and prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light or strong sunlight can also contribute to skin problems.

Subcutaneous sebaceous cysts can occur at any age, and while the exact risk factors are unknown, they are twice as common in men as in women, and most frequently seen in those aged 30-40. They are also more common in people with a history of severe acne.

Skin sebaceous cysts are visible and palpable as round, smooth-edged, skin-colored nodules. They usually have an opening and can vary in size from millimeters to several centimeters (0.5-5 cm). They may be single or multiple.

The cysts are slightly mobile and can be found anywhere on the skin, including the face, scalp, arms, legs, torso, and genitals. They are often asymptomatic. Scrotal cysts can occur in multiple locations and are often hard and calcified.

Skin sebaceous cysts are often asymptomatic and do not become cancerous, so treatment is usually unnecessary. However, if you wish to remove the cyst, surgery is necessary to completely remove the cyst sac.

If the cyst remains, it can recur in the same location. However, if infection occurs, treatment involves antibiotics, surgical drainage of the cyst's contents or pus, and possibly injections of anti-inflammatory medication into the cyst.

Common side effects of sebaceous cysts include infection, causing swelling, redness, and pain. Fever may also occur. While these cysts are generally harmless, there is a risk of abnormalities or cancer. Patients should consult a doctor for a thorough examination if they notice any of the following symptoms:

  • The cyst grows larger than 5 centimeters.
  • The cyst grows rapidly again after removal.
  • Other signs of infection, such as pain, redness, or pus.
  • Head/Face
  • Neck/Chest
  • Back
  • Genitals
  • Arms/Legs

Removing moles isn't difficult, and there are several methods. Currently, the most popular and considered safest methods are laser treatment or surgical removal.

Laser Treatment : This is commonly used for small moles. The laser used for mole removal is a CO2 laser. Before the laser treatment, the doctor will apply a local anesthetic to the treatment area. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour for the anesthetic to take effect, or a local anesthetic may be injected, depending on the doctor's discretion. Multiple moles can be removed at once, without limitation on the number. After the laser treatment, the doctor will apply an antiseptic and cover the area with a small plaster to prevent contact with water for one day. After the plaster is removed, the area can be exposed to water, but the antiseptic should be applied again for about 7 days. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may cause the scar to darken. However, if you want to use sunscreen, do so after the wound has healed completely. Avoid using cosmetics on the laser or surgical wound until it has healed completely.

Surgical Removal : In this method, the doctor will inject a local anesthetic around the mole and then excise it. The wound is then sutured closed. The procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes. The scar from the sutures is just a small line and will gradually fade over time. Surgery is effective for large moles because it allows for a deep incision to remove the entire mole. After surgery, the wound must be kept dry until the stitches are removed, which the doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment for approximately 5-10 days later.

Acne scar surgery is a type of treatment for acne scars. It's one option for people with acne scars or deep, wide acne pits that cannot be treated by other methods such as laser treatment, subcision, acid stimulation, or needle stimulation.

The ideal size for acne scars to treat is no more than 3 millimeters. It can quickly conceal acne scars, but the results depend on age, skin condition, depth, width, characteristics of the scar, and individual response. Some cases may require a combination of treatment techniques. There is no downtime after treatment; you can resume your normal activities and work immediately.

  • Scarring may occur because acne scar surgery is a minor surgical procedure. Therefore, a possible side effect is scarring. However, these scars are usually not a major concern as they are small and typically heal on their own. Laser treatment can also speed up the healing process.

  • This method is more painful than other methods. While acne scar treatment with needles is painful, this method is even more so because it involves making small incisions in the face. You may not feel any pain while the anesthetic is active, but it can be very painful once the anesthetic wears off.

  • Choosing a skilled doctor is crucial. Because this is a surgical procedure, it's a delicate process requiring a certain level of skill, expertise, and experience. If the doctor isn't skilled, the acne scar treatment may not yield the desired results.
  • People with a few acne scars, but with large and deep pits.
  • People who have tried other treatments without success.
  • People who want their acne scars to disappear quickly.
  • People who are not afraid of surgery.
  • People who want to see noticeable results.
