Cryotherapy with Liquid Nitrogen Spray : A cold cauterization procedure to treat skin diseases.

Cryotherapy is a medical treatment that uses extreme cold to destroy abnormal cells in the skin. It employs liquid nitrogen at approximately -196°C, sprayed onto specific lesions to destroy abnormal tissue by freezing it.

Cryotherapy is commonly used to treat :

  • Common warts
  • Plantar warts
  • Actinic keratoses (can become cancerous, common in Caucasians)
  • Seborrheic keratoses
  • Molluscum contagiosum
  • Some types of superficial skin cysts
  • Some types of benign lesions
  • No surgery, no stitches.
  • Quick and easy, taking only a few minutes.
  • Low risk of infection.
  • No chemicals or large incisions.
  • Patients can wash their face/shower normally.
  • The lesions will not fall off immediately; it takes 5-14 days for them to detach.
  • Repetition may be necessary if the lesions are thick or deeply embedded.
  • Some individuals may develop white patches or uneven skin tone.
  • There is a possibility of blisters or hemorrhagic ulcers.

Before the procedure :

  • Inform your doctor if you have any underlying medical conditions, are taking anticoagulants, or have a history of keloid scarring.
  • No special medication discontinuation or preparation is required.

After the procedure :

  • You can wash your face/shower as usual.
  • Avoid rubbing the treated area vigorously.
  • Do not puncture blisters yourself.
  • Gently clean the area 1-2 times daily.
  • If blisters form, do not puncture them; allow them to dry on their own.
  • If there is an open wound, cover it with a sterile bandage.
  • Apply an antiseptic cream or ointment as recommended by your doctor.
  • Avoid direct sunlight until your skin has recovered.
  • The doctor will spray liquid nitrogen onto the lesion.
  • The spraying will be for short periods (5-30 seconds), depending on the size and depth.
  • This process may be repeated twice (freeze-thaw-freeze) for thicker lesions.
  • Typically, doctors will schedule a follow-up appointment in 1-2 weeks after the procedure.
  • If the lesion has not disappeared, a repeat treatment may be considered.
  • In some cases, such as deeply embedded warts, 2-3 treatments may be necessary, spaced 2-3 weeks apart.
